Artist Statement: My intentional choices of colors were made because I associate the symbol of a heart with the color red/pink, and wanted to use other lighter colors like green and white to create contrast between the red/pink colors. The gold pieces represent something that stands out and appeals to the eye in a neutral tone. I chose to create heart shaped earrings because it's a symbol of love and expression, while the top piece of the earrings represent a connection to the heart. The patterns mesh together, meaning the colors are tied together in some way. The biggest challenge was figuring out initially what shape would be intentional and look appealing. I overcame this by brainstorming ideas I liked and constructing it together to form the overall design. The most interesting thing about polymer clay is being able to color mix certain colors, to create different colors, which can impact the way a product will turn out. |
Artist Statement: The goal of this project was to create a pair of earrings with jump rings that would outline a specific design I had in mind. The big idea for this project was to make a pair of earrings that would incorporate the color gold with a pearl element. I chose to use these colors and design because I feel it best represents me. It represents me because it correlates to how I feel my light/bubbly personality is. I started my research process by looking for jump ring earrings designs on a wide basis, and then narrowed down my own personal design when I did my sketching. I used techniques such as trial and error, and pinpointing whether or not I felt the product matched to my liking. The challenges I had were figuring out what I really wanted to design/create. I overcame this challenge by trying multiple designs until I realized which one I liked the best. The most successful part of my piece was the color scheme. I think one thing I could improve on is making my whole piece more sturdy in terms of how it will look when it's moved around, but still think it flows well and has a meaning to it. |
Artist Statement: My small/medium pendant represents a symbol of my childhood cat that passed away a few years ago. It specifically represents her sassy mood and high class attitude, illustrated by the bright gold color and movement of the piece itself. Some pros of working with the metal material itself and the other materials in the process was that it was easy once you get the technique down, easy to maneuver once comfortable and not too hard to saw. Some cons I would say is the saw getting stuck from time to time making it hard to move smoothly, cutting out small negative spaces and even trying to make the piece smooth/shiny in the end. The major challenge for me during this process was buffing my piece during the final steps, but I overcame it by pressing harder while buffing and not giving up on buffing each area a sufficient amount of times. The most successful part of this project was sawing out the whole shape of the cat design in the sawing process. I felt my cutting technique was well because I could go up and down smoothly, without applying a great amount of pressure against my piece. Something that could be improved is the amount of tiny scratches that appear on my piece by possibly sanding/buffing some more, though I feel I gave this piece a good amount of effort and the final piece shows it's hard work.
